We take a look at how the surface behaves RT facing Samsung
Galaxy Note 10.1
Form
Surface RT - 274.6x172x9.4mm, 680g
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
262x180x8.9 mm, 597 g
The area has a distinctive RT, it is much more angular than
other tablets of similar size from other manufacturers.
The tablet measures 9.4 mm thick. It is also made of an
unusual material - magnesium PVD treated - which gives the device a solid feel.
Other features include a thin but sturdy kickstand on the
back of the tablet.
When Microsoft said it worked like a car door, it was not a
joke. Resistance to opening and closing is reassuring.
We must also mention the two optional keyboard covers to the
extent they are truly part of the concept of hybrid design.
Type the Cover is the best of both. It is slightly thicker
and is available in black, but it is much closer to a real keyboard.
The Touch Cover is really viable for the lightest typing
functions. It is thinner and comes in a range of colors. It is certainly easier
than using a touch screen keyboard, but it is far from being as good as the
Type Cover.
Both versions are equipped with a functional trackpad.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is consistent with other devices
in the Galaxy. It has a frame balnc or black with silver accents. The overall
shape is more rectangular than the iPad, but more than the curved surface.
The centered position of the screen and the bezel width is
similar to the surface, and in both cases, the glasses are relatively thin.
This gives these two tablets look very modern and stylish.
Note 10.1 unfortunately inherited the build quality of the
Galaxy with a slippery plastic and sticky. This has the effect of giving a
cheap look to the device.
Winner - Surface RT
Display
The RT area has a multitouch screen 10.6-inch LCD with HD
Microsoft ClearType tehcnologie and 1366x768 resolution.
Cla gives a pixel density of 148 pixels only per inch (ppi),
which is surprising because in practice the picture quality is quite
impressive.
The text is very easy to read, but the images and videos
appear too. The colors, contrast, black depth and brightness are very good.
As its name suggests, the Galaxy Note 10.1 has a PLS LCD
screen of 10.1 inches with a 1280x800 pixel resolution and a pixel density of
149ppi.
Winner - Surface RT
Storage
The Microsoft Surface RT option of 32 GB and 64 GB capacity
and microSDXC for cards up to 64GB.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is configured the same way with
suelement plus a 16 GB version
Winner - Equality
Hardware, software and Performance
The Surface RT uses a chip Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core clocked
at 1.3 GHz with a semiconductor archtiecture 40 nanometers (nm), 2 GB of RAM
and a single-channel ULP GeForce GPU.
This feeds RT Windows quickly enough, but it is also a
platform well optimized. The speed of loading applications are not as fast as
we would have liked, but it seems that this is due to software rather than a
lack of power.
At present there is not much on the Windows Store as
graphically demanding games or intensive applications that could help put the
proceseur tested.
In general, the application system is not dynamic enough in
all areas, which is a shame, but that could change over time.
Another negative RT for Windows is obscure control system,
which revolves around sliding movements from the edges to access sub-menus
called "Charms".
In our opinion, there are too many gestures, settings menus
are distributed illogical and generally anything that is too
"scattered" when it should be centralized, localized and easily
accessible.
Admittedly, this is in contradiction with the rest of the
platform, which seems to make more sense - modern user interface is essentially
a giant Start menu and is very similar to the main Home screen Windows Phone as
a continuous range of colors shortcuts known as Live Tiles.
There are some excellent features, however. The area has the
RT People Hub for aggregating your contacts and messages, Skype integration is
superb and the Office suite works fine with the keyboard dock.
In addition, as his opponent, Surface RT also supports a
stylus. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is also a quad core system, running on its
own Exynos chip 4412 with 2 GB of dual-channel RAM, architecture and 32nm GPU
Mali-400MP quad core.
It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and overall performance is
excellent, due in part to the optimization settings of Google and improvements
in the user interface Butter.
However, there are some functions where things slow down
considerably, particularly, the function of Multiscreen Samsung, which lets you
split the screen between two applications.
It works, but it slows performance and it's even worse when
you start to use the stylus S-Pen and more.
Apart from that, Android is a very compelling platform on
Note 10.1 is fast, intuitive control thanks to the carousel is multitasking
Google and you have a choice of about 700,000 applications on Google Play.
The S-Pen stylus is also excellent (apart from the question
above Multiscreen) and works particularly well with applications dedicated to
the art and photography.
It is difficult to determine a winner because both are
really good in terms of power. Regarding operating systems, each with its pros
and cons.
However, the main problem with the RT area at the moment is
the lack of applications, which, combined with the fact that, unlike real
Windows 8 devices, you can not install third party software, which means it is
rather limited in scope.
Winner - Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
Conclusion
Note the size 10.1 and RT both offer different approaches to
the notion of productivity on a tablet.
Note 10.1 The aims at the creation, focusing on pen input
and artistic applications, and the flexibility of the Android platform.
RT is the area for the office worker, with its keyboard and
its Office suite, but Microsoft has not neglected the use of the style.
